Is Driving While Dehydrated as Bad as Driving While Drunk?

TrafficThere have been some interesting studies come out recently that have proven to many people that driving while drunk, distracted, and fatigued are almost equally dangerous. However, another study that’s been making the rounds studies the effects of not drinking enough water. Not only can it increase the chances of getting into a car accident, but it can increase the chances that a person experiences critical injuries.

There are real dangers to dehydration

People can get dehydrated no matter where they live, but Florida has very high temps coupled with high humidity – it’s a perfect recipe for dehydration. The moment you feel thirsty, then you should drink some water. Many people will point out that by the time you’re thirsty you’re already dehydrated, but this doesn’t mean you don’t need to pick up that water bottle.

Other signs that you may be dehydrated include being more sensitive to the heat and the sun. Being dehydrated weakens the muscles and can make it harder to concentrate. This can result in delayed reaction times – which makes it more likely that you’ll get involved in a car accident.

The study in question

The study we’re referring was done in the U.K. and involved driving simulators. Men who were hydrated appropriately used the simulators, and then later, when they were dehydrated, they used the simulators again. Researchers say that the level of dehydration was mild. Researchers say the results were clear: Drivers who were even a little bit dehydrated had slower reaction times, worse judgement, and made more mistakes.

In short, they made as many mistakes as a person who drove while drunk. This is startling news and something that even those who are very careful to never drive drunk may be afraid of. Florida Accident Lawyers suggest that you keep yourself hydrated throughout the day. Remember that driving won’t be the only time this affects you – it can also affect your ability to complete your job as well as you should, to parent, etc.
