Recent Auto Accident Has FSU Students Pushing for Uber

drink-driving-808790_1920Auto accidents are an unfortunately common occurrence on Florida roads. Some cases, however, draw special attention to themselves. Consider a recent article for FSU News titled “Fate of Uber uncertain across state.”

Jazmyn Reed of FSU News writes, “Although it may be easy for FSU students to grab an Uber after a night out, across the state of Florida the availability of the ride-sharing service varies. Uber, Lyft and other ride-sharing apps have been banned in multiple counties across the state and its fate is still yet to be determined in many others. But for many FSU students it remains a convenient and affordable transportation option… Adding to the app’s list of benefits, students see it as a solution to drinking and driving. Núñez-Castilla says she uses Uber mostly during nights out with friends in order to get back home. ‘I use Uber out of convenience when I go out on the weekends, also because I don’t drink and drive, ‘Hanna Touton, a sophomore elementary education major, said. ‘I think it is more convenient and safer than a taxi. All the drivers I have ridden with have been really nice and friendly. ‘Following a recent car accident that took the lives of several FSU students and involved alcohol, Madison Social donated $1 to the victims’ families for each Uber ride to or from the bar. In July, the City of Tallahassee passed an ordinance that requires Uber drivers to follow city insurance, permitting processes and must follow the same rules as cab drivers when making pick-ups at the airport.”
