Rodrigo Cabrera smashed his 2006 Audi A4 into the women’s car on April 22, 2011, at the intersection of Southwest 137th Avenue and 72nd Street in West Kendall. The crash left driver Alysia Artiles and passenger Liurel Bravo with serious injuries. Artiles was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery for internal injuries, including a collapsed lung, a lacerated colon and liver and a fractured rib and pelvis. Doctors also removed her bleeding spleen. Bravo also suffered from a collapsed lung, as well as four broken ribs. Courtney Engelke, one of the women’s representatives in court, released a statement calling the crash ‘senseless and horrific.’ ‘The defendant driver was speeding through a residential neighborhood in our community and caused life threatening injuries to two young women. The defendants decided not to appear in court, and this case was tried so that a jury could finally make the defendants accountable for the injuries they caused,’ she wrote.”
